Aims and scope
Due to the sudden and huge restrictions in face-to-face teaching brought about by the Corona pandemic starting with the summer semester 2020, an unprecedented change and renewal of teaching formats has occurred. Even though these changes were forced by the restrictions due to the pandemic, the experiences and concepts that were developed are of enormous value for a renewal of teaching towards modern, digitally supported forms of teaching and learning and towards more competence-oriented learning. At the beginning of the winter semester 2020/21, a conference entitled "Lessons Learned - Spin Offs of a Digital Semester" was held at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at TU Dresden to support this renewal through the exchange of experiences. A conference series has emerged from this first conference and at the same time the journal "Lessons Learned" was launched. The aim of this journal is to discuss new forms of teaching and learning not only in the mathematical and natural sciences and technical sciences, but far beyond in all subject disciplines and thus to create a platform where teachers can inform themselves about new concepts and adapt them for their own teaching.
The journal is fed by the contributions of the Lessons Learned conference series, special thematic issues as well as free contributions.
The journal is deliberately published in two languages, both to make the lessons learnt accessible to an international audience and to ensure that the linked examples are accompanied by a text in the teaching language in which they were produced. This means no additional work for the authors, as articles can be submitted in either German or English. Once an article has been accepted, it is translated into the other language by the journal, which means that the authors only have to proofread the translated article.
The target readership of the journal
Lessons Learned addresses scholars, educators, and practitioners engaged in the development and research of digital and hybrid teaching in higher education. The journal is aimed at those interested in critically reflecting on teaching practices, sharing evidence-based insights, and contributing to the advancement of teaching and learning cultures across disciplines. It welcomes readers from diverse academic backgrounds who seek to understand and shape the evolving landscape of higher education through innovative and reflective approaches.
Publishing schedule and publication form
Lessons Learned was published twice a year until the spring of 2025. One edition was published around six months after the conference, at the end of the year, and the second in the following spring. This publication schedule took into account the workload of university lecturers. Authors could choose when their conference paper should be published and plan accordingly. This was to ensure that valuable insights from the ongoing development of higher education were systematically documented and made accessible.
From summer 2025, the publication rhythm of Lessons Learned should enable the rapid and efficient publication of high-quality research results. Lessons Learned will be a continuous journal, i.e. it will not have a traditional publication schedule. Instead, articles will be published online as soon as they are accepted and edited.
Lessons Learned has no embargo period, which means that articles will be available online as soon as they are published.
The journal is available online. All published articles are available in PDF format. Printed issues are only available on request.
Long term preservation
All articles and PDFs are long-term identifiable by DOIs. Lessons Learned is also archived by the German National Library and PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN), including all full-text PDFs.
Furthermore, the publications of Lessons Learned hosted by PUBLIA – SLUB Open Publishing are permanently stored in the SLUB bitstream archive. After conversion of the files into the required PDF/A standard format, functional long-term preservation takes place in SLUBarchiv.digital. This local long-term archive is constantly being further developed and enables OA publications to be backed up independently of external service providers.
Copyright & Licensing
Lessons Learned copyright and licensing policy is designed to promote the dissemination of knowledge and to allow authors to retain control over their work while still publishing it in the journal. Specifically:
- Author retains copyright, no transfer of copyright: Authors retain the copyright to their work, which means they can reuse, modify, and distribute their work as they see fit.

- Repositories and self-archiving: Authors can self-archive their articles and deposit their articles in repositories, such as arXiv, PubMed Central, or institutional repositories, as long as they comply with the journal's self-archiving policy.
The self-archiving policy of Lessons Learned is as follows:

- Author's final version / Version of Record (VoRs): Authors can deposit the final version of the article after publication in repositories of their choice (e.g. an institutional, disciplinary and general-purpose repository, etc.), as long as it is the version that was accepted for publication.
- No embargo: There is no embargo period, which means that authors can deposit their articles in repositories immediately after publication.
- Bibliographic information: Full bibliographic information (authors, article title, journal title, volume, issue, pages) about the original publication must be provided and links must be made to the article's DOI and the license.
- CC-BY license: Authors must ensure that the deposited article is licensed under a CC BY license, which allows others to share, use, and build upon the work as long as they give proper credit to the original authors.
